The University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez, also known as simply UPRM, is a land-grant, sea-grant, space-grant state university located in Mayaguez, the 8th largest municipality of Puerto Rico, situated in the center of the western coast on the island of Puerto Rico. UPRM is the 2nd largest university campus of the University of Puerto Rico system and the premier science and engineering institution of the Caribbean and Latin America.

The university was officially established in September, 1911, being created in March, 1903, by an act of the Legislative Assembly, outgrowing the Normal School, established 3 years earlier, which had the mission to train Puerto Rican teachers. Today, UPRM continues its development and currently offers its students various educational programs in several areas of study, trough 5 academic divisions, which include the Colleges of Arts and Sciences, Business Administration and Engineering.

Athletics

UPRM's athletic teams, known as the Tarzans, compete in 16 men's and 12 women's sports, in LAI, and they have a bulldog as their mascot. Their distinctive colors are green and white.

Olga D. Gonzales-Sanabria - the highest ranking Hispanic at NASA Glenn Research Center, William A. Navas, Jr. - the first Puerto Rican to be named an Assistant Secretary of the Navy, Antonio Fas Alzamora - former President of the Senate of Puerto Rico, Orlando Figueroa - director of the Mars Exploration Program in NASA, plus many others.
